Al-Baquee

"And whoever holds in honour the Rites of Allah (in the scarifies of animals) such (honour) should come truly from piety of hearts" (Al-Haj 32).

Janat-ul-Baqee After 1925

The eight of Shawwal is considered to be a sad day for Muslims. It is on this day that the Wahabbi clan has assaulted the sanctity tombs and destroying their holy shrines. This clan does not allow buildings on graves however great the dead person may be and they prohibit honouring of graves and regard it as disobedience to religious belief and a form of polytheism. They also consider entreaty with the prophet (SAWA), the imams and the godly men as aberration and deviation from the right path. This is in contrast to the other schools of thoughts in Islam that allow building of graves. In fact, they consider it desirable (mustahab). They even look it at as show of respect and honour to those embraced in these graves unlike the Wahabbi clan who portrays it as worship of graves.

The destruction and demolition of the holy shrines of Imams (AS), the prophet's wives (SAWA), this companions, pious men and martyrs of Islam was completed on 8 Shawwal 1344 after hijra (21 April 1925 AD) . Since that disastrous day, the ruling authorities that follow the Wahabbi faith did not pay any attention to the objects of the Muslim world or their demands to rebuild and restore these holy places.

Undoubtedly, preservation of historical monuments, especially those related to the leaders of Islam is a duty dictated by natural sentiments and emotions. Similarly, people are naturally eager to honour their great and dignified leaders. The spiritual and historical leaders have also adhered to this principle throughout history.

The Baqee' cemetery embraces the graves of a number of Islamic leaders eminent men. The messenger of Allah, Mohammad (SAWA),used to visit the Baqee' where he would stand by the graves, pray and ask forgiveness for the dead. Historical sources also report that he once stood by the grave of one of his noble companions, Othman bin Madhoon, saying,'peace be upon you, (you) houses of faithful men. We, by the will of Allah, are joining you. May Allah forgive those lying in Baqee' 'al-farqad'.

The seerah (way of light) of the holy prophet (SAWA) demonstrates that visiting of graves is desirable (mustahab). The way of life of the prophet companions also indicates this. However, it is regrettable that, contrary to all Muslim schools of thought, the Muslims have been disallowed from visiting these honourable graves. Instead, the ruling authorities ignored repeated calls by authorities have converted the graves of the imams of the prophet's household, his wives and his pious companions to a pile of scattered rubbles. Is this demolition of graves not a departure from the sunnah (way of life) of the prophet (SAWA) and his companions?

Allah has told us that the prophet's way of life is a good example and to be followed. Allah has also ordered us to obey him and be guided by his religious codes (sharia). One of these established codes is to respect the dead and refrain from insulting them. Destruction and demolition of the graves is a clear insult to the dead and a disgrace to the honour of the Muslim nation.
